Introduction

The City of Charlotte Information & Technology Department is seeking a Network Technician. The purpose of this position is to maintain and support the City data network infrastructure and will be accomplished by working both independently and as a part of a team to implement and support LAN/WAN networks, wireless networks, and client VPN solutions.  Systems and solutions supported include datacenters, video operations centers, public safety dispatch communication centers, transportation networks, and campus network environments with a particular emphasis on operational technology.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and resolve incident tickets. Troubleshoots network issues by analyzing network symptoms; conducting research into reasons for the issues; implementing workaround, updates and changes.
  • Review, assess, and complete customer service requests for technical support.
  • Monitor network status and provide support for issues related to the network infrastructure, hardware and applications.
  • Perform network maintenance by updating network configuration to meet best practices, upgrade software versions, and correct security vulnerabilities.
  • Perform new site hardware installations at remote sites. Assist in designing networks by analyzing network requirements; developing various network designs by consulting superiors as needed; documenting IP ranges; submitting orders for network equipment; analyzing costs requirements; and collaborating to configure power requirements and properly size facilities.
  • Completes network documentation by producing reliable and accurate diagrams and coordinating proper documentation with vendors.  May be involved with preparing documentation for operating instructions, procedures, and controls to assure trouble free operation of systems.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation with other team members on a regular basis.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • CCNA or CCENT 1 and 2 is highly desired.
  • Previous experience in a Network Operations Center preferred.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Strong communications skills (verbal and written).
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Keen analytical skills.
  • Ability to successfully interface with a wide range of personnel within the organization.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays if needed.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a high school diploma with a minimum of three years of experience in data networks functionality and technologies and knowledge of advanced IP networks.

OR

Associate's degree in Networking Technology from an accredited community college, vocational institute, or technical college with a minimum of one year of experience in data networks functionality and technologies and knowledge of advanced IP networks. 

OR

Bachelor's level degree

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
