Introduction

The Sr. Claims Representative  works  with minimal supervision assisting the Workers Compensation Claims Manager and the Workers Compensation Section in Risk Management with processing medical only and complex Workers Compensation claims for the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Handle lost-time workers’ compensation claims; medical-only cases may be assigned as well
  • Advises workers and supervisors regarding proper procedures for reporting and handling on-the-job injuries
  • Reviews and investigates claims to determine compensability and authorizes workers’ compensation benefits, if appropriate; explain workers’ compensation benefits to the injured worker; 3 point contact
  • Accept or deny claims based on prompt investigation results
  • Maintains an effective diary system for review of claims; documents all files with factual information
  • Coordinates and authorizes appropriate medical treatment to ensure exceptional care and early return to work
  • Establishes and maintains adequate monetary reserves for claims through the life of each claim
  • Responsible for reporting qualified claims to the appropriate Excess Carrier
  • Attend legal proceedings, mediation, hearings, and meetings as needed and requested by the claim manager
  • Ensure all medical records and notes from medical providers are electronically attached to the claim
  • Reviews and approves medical bills to ensure proper and timely payments 
  • Maintain good working relationship with department contacts to update them on claims and their status 
  • Close files and complete appropriate forms to report to the NCIC within the regulatory time frames
  • Maintain current NC Adjusters license or obtain license within 6 months of hire
  • Performs all other work-related duties as required or assigned
  • Reports to Workers’ Comp Claims Manager

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Superior customer service skills 
  • An advanced understanding of Worker’s Compensation claims handling and working with multiple agencies and/or a property and casualty claims
  • Ability to easily multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Computer literate with skills in Microsoft office 
  • Proficiency in office clerical skills 
  • Demonstrate excellent phone etiquette 
  • Excellent language / grammar / communication / organizational skills 

Preferred Qualification

  • Prior experience with insurance claims & subrogation
  • Knowledge of insurance / medical / legal terminology

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and five years relevant experience.

Or

Associate’s Degree and three years relevant experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
