College Internship

Summary

Seeking an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an Urban Design, Landscape Architecture or Architecture degree program to assist senior planning and design staff in the Charlotte Urban Design Center (UDC) with the development of design and planning related research, reports, illustrative plans, 3-dimensional analysis and modeling studies, and assists the UDC as needed.  This temporary opportunity is for the 2024 summer months.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists senior planning and design staff in the Charlotte Urban Design Center (UDC) with the development of design and planning related research, reports, illustrative plans, 3-dimensional analysis and modeling studies, and assists the UDC as needed. 
  • Work will include project production associated with planning studies and reports, including area studies, corridor plans, redevelopment plans and streetscape design as part of a Planning team. 
  • Involved in supporting placemaking projects and urban design educational programming. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience working collaboratively in a project team environment with planning scale and site plan scale projects is highly desired. 
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong working knowledge of design software such as SketchUp Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, GIS/ArcPro, and Office Suite, as well as an ability to graphically illustrate design solutions by hand.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and a student in good academic standing. Preference for students enrolled in a program leading to a degree in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or Architecture. 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
