Summary

Charlotte Water is currently accepting applications for the Career Training Academy Program.  This internship will include hands on experience, classroom learning and exposure to the role of Treatment Plant Mechanic Assistant. The intern must be able to commit to the full seven-month assignment and be available to work a designated weekly/hourly schedule. The training will include exposure to Charlotte Water’s Environmental Management division in addition to gaining job readiness skills. 

This internship position assists treatment plant operators and maintenance staff on with daily maintenance and operation at the assigned treatment facility. This internship position performs scheduled preventative maintenance on various mechanical and process equipment throughout the plants. This internship position operates landscaping equipment on the plant site, unloads delivered materials, assist in maintaining plant grounds, and performs housekeeping duties as needed. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Applicants for this internship position learn the following tasks as it pertains to the daily work:

Assist operations with duties such as process equipment calibrations, bulk chemical receiving and off-loading, and taking process samples.  
Assist with maintaining bulk chemical and fuel tank levels by placing orders for products as required or necessary. 
Assist with certain regulatory requirements such as completing fire security inspections and stormwater facility inspections.
Manages recycling and dumpster materials and prepares appropriate reports and manifest as needed.  
Performs lite maintenance duties to such as painting equipment, buildings, and curbs, changing light fixtures, making small repair to plant treatment equipment, and other building maintenance duties; Assists in maintaining small mechanical equipment.  
Facility maintenance which includes cleaning of treatment tanks, basins, floors, walkways, and grounds, etc.
Assists in scheduling, follow up and transporting plant vehicles for necessary maintenance and inspections.
Runs various errands as needed such as picking up maintenance or laboratory supplies.
Operates plant landscaping equipment and performs housekeeping duties as needed.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of computer skills with ability to work with various software.
Knowledge of good oral/written communication skills.
Ability to learn to operate equipment such as loaders, skid steers, zero turn mowers, bush hogs, weed trimmers, chain saws, and other equipment. 
Ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions. 
Ability to work independently and prioritize work duties. 
Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and external vendors. 
Ability to obtain a City driving authorization.
Ability to work as a team member.
Ability to follow safety regulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
The work is heavy work and requires applying up to 30 pounds of force constantly; applying 50 pounds of force frequently; and exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by spoken word, shouting above noises, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment, and walking. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. Requires working indoors/ outdoors; during inclement weather; around chemicals, solvents, and dust in an industrial environment and working weekends and holidays as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED
Valid North Carolina Drivers’ License with an acceptable driving record.

Salary

$23.00/Hour

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
