Summary

The Engineering and Operations Division of the City of Charlotte’s Department of Transportation is a recognized leader in Traffic Safety and Vision Zero adoption. CDOT maintains 13 years of crash data reported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. This data is used for analysis and decision support for allocating Capital Improvement Program bond funds in accordance with our Vision Zero Action Plan endorsed in 2019.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Vision Zero Task Force meetings (50+ people representing 25 organizations). 
  • Plan and lead Vision Zero community events in collaboration with other city departments and/or Vision Zero Task Force agencies. 
  • Lead responses to public inquiries regarding traffic safety, fatalities, or Vision Zero program. 
  • Attend neighborhood and civic/community group meetings to develop and implement solutions to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. 
  • Develop/deliver presentation material to effectively communicate with citizens of varying socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. 
  • Develop/deliver PowerPoint and other presentations to community groups, business organizations, and internal departments regarding Vision Zero program goals. 
  • Serve as primary CDOT resource for Open Streets planning and execution (two events per year and year-round outreach). 
  • Resolve complex and challenging assignments with businesses and citizens. Must be comfortable handling conflict resolution with staff and community members 
  • Partner with Charlotte Communications & Marketing on traffic safety / Vision Zero public messaging. 
  • Research, investigate and develop new traffic safety outreach efforts. 
  • Attend evening and weekend meetings as needed.

  • Explain traffic safety and Vision Zero projects to citizens 
  • Proficient in computer and software usage, including Microsoft products 
  • Excellent public-speaking, presentation and facilitation skills 
  • Must work well under pressure with competing priorities
  • Proven ability to use effective judgment

Preferred Qualification

  • Prefer broad experience in communicating with diverse crowds 
  • Organized and detail oriented 
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with community partners 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and five years related work experience

OR

Associate's Degree and three years related work experience

OR

Bachelor's Degree and one level related work experience

OR

Master's Degree

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
