The Department of New Haven Community Resilience is a data-driven coordinated social services agency that aims to address complex human services needs in New Haven by diverting people from the criminal justice system and promoting community healing and well-being.
The department seeks to improve the city’s ability to coordinate among contractors and service providers serving similar populations with similar needs to minimize duplication. It supports programs in data-based problem analysis and identifying and tracking key performance metrics that can be reported to the administration, Board of Alders, and the public.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is a high-level role tasked with developing, overseeing and coordinating City-wide Violence Prevention Initiatives.
As the Coordinator for the Office of Violence Prevention, you will be key in our mission to reduce firearm-related injuries and fatalities in our community. Your responsibilities encompass strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, and policy development. You will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive strategic plan, ensuring a multifaceted approach that covers prevention, intervention, and community engagement. Collaborating closely with stakeholders, you'll conduct rigorous data analysis to identify ongoing trends in violence, allowing for precise allocation of resources and targeted interventions.
In your role, you'll serve as the central coordinator for city-wide violence prevention initiatives, acting as the bridge between various programs and agencies. This includes law enforcement-led programs, violence interruption efforts, youth engagement initiatives, and reentry services. You'll continuously monitor program quality and outcomes, aligning with the Department's commitment to transparency, accountability, and reporting. Through these efforts, you'll ensure that our strategies remain effective and adaptable to the evolving needs of the community.
Integral to your role is the cultivation of community engagement and empowerment. You'll develop strategies to actively involve community members, faith leaders, and grassroots organizations in violence prevention endeavors. By providing technical support and building networks, you'll empower communities to address the root causes of violence. Additionally, you'll lead interagency meetings, fostering crucial relationships with key stakeholders in the fight against violence. Your advocacy efforts will extend beyond program implementation, as you prepare and review legislative proposals related to violence prevention, ensuring that policy decisions align with our mission to create a safer and healthier New Haven.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs the violence prevention initiatives organized through the Department of Community Resilience.
- Develops and/or revises and coordinates the implementation of the strategic plan for addressing gun violence.
- Collects, maintains, analyzes, reports, and interpret data related to violence in New Haven.
- Works with staff to conduct routine problem analysis to understand ongoing trends in violence.
- Develops policies and policy recommendations related to reducing violence in New Haven.
- Coordinates among city-wide violence prevention initiatives including law enforcement- led programs, violence interruption programs, youth engagement programs, group violence intervention programs, reentry and case management.
- Monitors the quality and outcomes of violence prevention programs and aligns with the Department’s framework on transparency, accountability and reporting.
- Develops and implements strategies to ensure community members, faith leaders and other grass-roots community organizations are involved and supported in violence prevention initiatives.
- Provides technical support and builds networks to empower communities to address root causes of violence.
- Facilitates interagency meetings, including strategic, tactical and case-management meetings.
- Fosters key interagency relationships including with Epidemiologists, Police Department Sworn and non-sworn staff, Department of Corrections.
- Identifies and pursues funding and new partnerships relevant to the department mission.
- Serves as the City’s liaison and representative for Violence Prevention in local, state, and national forums.
- Prepares, submits and/or reviews legislative proposals related to violence prevention.
- Performs other related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university with major course work in social services, criminology, public health, social work or other relevant area. Masters’ degree or equivalent experience preferred. At least 1-3 years of work experience in the government or non-profit sector coordinating complex, multi-faceted projects.

- Considerable knowledge of the principles and best-practices of gun violence prevention.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of governmental program administration.
- Considerable knowledge in the principles and practices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in program and policy design.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of research and evaluation methodologies related to gun violence prevention.
- Knowledge of results-based accountability or other reporting and accountability frameworks.
- Ability to function in a fast-paced environment and to adjust to new information and demands quickly.
- Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to engage, motivate, and cultivate partnerships
- Ability to prepare and present material publicly, to organize and work with public and private groups, funders and agencies and to represent the city in an official capacity.
- Ability to use standard MSOffice Suite programs.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, convene and manage coalition and meetings of diverse groups of stakeholders.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a "Special Fund," non-tested position. Continued employment contingent upon availability of future funding.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Special Funded employees shall not be covered by the City pension but shall continue to be covered by Social Security.
