A Public Health Veterinarian is public health veterinarian work at the managerial level. Employees in this classification are responsible for directing the statewide public health veterinary program of the Maryland Department of Health which includes vector-borne and rabies disease control and zoonotic and avian epidemiology. Employees in this classification supervise directly or through subordinate supervisors assigned professional, technical and support staff employees.
Employees in this classification receive managerial supervision from a higher level administrator.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.
Plans, directs and administers all aspects of the statewide veterinary public health program of the Maryland Department of Health;
Establishes program goals to meet program objectives and oversees their achievement;
Establishes and oversees implementation of policies, procedures, standards and controls for the program including implementation and approval of programmatic revisions;
Oversees and manages the personnel and financial resources of the program;
Represents the Maryland Department of Health before federal, State and local officials, legislative committees and senior managers concerning veterinary public health issues;
Provides consultative service on veterinary public health issues to headquarters and local health personnel;
Gives lectures on veterinary public health to medical and veterinary medical students, graduate students and professional and lay groups;
Evaluates implementation of programs and coordinates with public and private agencies providing related services;
Performs other related duties.

Notes:
1. Applicants for this classification must be licensed and currently registered with the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners to practice veterinary medicine under Maryland State Law. A photocopy of the current registration must be attached to the application.
2. Applicants for this classification not yet licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland but who are eligible for licensure must attach a photocopy of a letter from the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners stating eligibility by reciprocity or endorsement. Applicants will not be appointed until they have received a license from the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The Board may be contacted at 50 Harry S.
