An Assistant Supervisor, Property Maps is responsible technical work at the supervisory level in the preparation of property assessment maps. Employees in this classification assist the Supervisor, Tax Maps in the Department of Assessments and Taxation. Employees in this classification makes final decisions on technical problems within their area of specialization. Employees in this classification, in the absence of the Supervisor, Tax Maps, assumes full responsibility for the operation of the Tax Map Division. Employees in this classification plan, schedule, and supervise the work of a number of Drafters, Assessments Cartographers, clerical personnel and resolves technical problems and reviews work for drafting sufficiency and accuracy.
Employees in this classification receives general supervision from the Supervisor, Tax Maps, who outlines the work to be accomplished and the time allowed.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.
Assists the Supervisor, Tax Maps with the operation of the Tax Map Division;
Directs the activities of the technical Drafters and Assessments Cartographers of the office;
Trains Drafters and Assessments Cartographers in the technical facets of map work;
Checks inking of final maps for compliance with accepted standards;
Maintains communication between State central office and the local assessment offices;
Calculates enlargement and reduction ratios of maps, plats and charts;
Furnishes property information to city, State and federal departments and independent Surveyors and Engineers;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of land and topographic surveying;
Knowledge of the use of drafting instruments and nomenclature, symbols, and of the sources of drafting information;
Knowledge of civil engineering methods;
Knowledge of the methods of developing property assessment maps, plats and charts;
Knowledge of the tax assessment process as practiced in Maryland;
Knowledge, at the introductory level, of office and commercial reproduction methods;
Knowledge with the methods of interpreting aerial photographs;
Knowledge of photogrammetric mapping;
Ability to supervise a staff of technical Drafters, Assessments Cartographers and clerical personnel;
Ability to assist in the preparation of work schedules;
Ability to deal effectively with local officials and the general public.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Eight years of successful progressively responsible experience in drafting, four years must have been in planning and supervising property assessment map projects.
Note: Candidates may substitute the possession of additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 credit hours for each year of nonsupervisory drafting experience, for up to a maximum of four years of the required experience.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
