The employee in this classification has the primary responsibility for the major and minor repair and maintenance of several small diesel and gasoline propelled boats.

This class is differentiated from the next higher class by the size of the fleet. The employee is responsible for the periodic and routine mechanical inspection to the boats, making recommendations as to their condition and need for repairs. In addition, the employee in this class is also in charge of the routine maintenance and repair of a relatively small group of State buildings and mechanical equipment, including low-pressure oil burners. Responsibilities also include preparing cost estimates of necessary repairs, but the employee does not normally determine budgetary priority of repairs. Duties may also include making major or minor repairs to trucks or automobiles.

The employee receives general direction and supervises semi-skilled maintenance employees.

Performs major and minor repairs on several diesel and gasoline propelled small boats;

Inspects, dismantles, repairs and replaces broken or worn parts in gasoline or diesel marine engines;

Inspects small boats, trucks, and automobiles, and makes recommendations concerning needed repairs;

Maintains steam pipes, hot and cold water lines, sewer pipes, and necessary fittings;

Performs general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of wooden furniture, floors, windows, or other parts of buildings;

Checks all electrical systems and makes minor repairs to electrical motors and appliances;

Prepares cost estimates of necessary repairs;

Keeps records of repairs made and recommends that needed parts be requisitioned;

Operates the small boats and/or oil scavenger barge;

Performs other necessary duties as required.

General knowledge of the construction of gasoline and diesel powered engines; of the assembling of parts and of installation and repair of boats; of building maintenance and of the maintenance and repair of machinery, tools and building repair; of mechanical trades;

Ability to maintain records, make reports and prepare cost estimates; to exercise mechanical skill; to repair and refuel all types of marine engines, both gasoline and diesel; to supervise.

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience in marine vessel and marine engine maintenance and repair.

Note: Applicants may substitute additional experience as described above for the required high school education, on a year for year basis, provided the applicant has completed elementary school.
