A Carpenter Supervisor is the supervisory level of carpentry and trim work involving the construction, installation, alteration, removal, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment, and other articles that are made of wood or of other related material, and in the repair and installation of glass. Employees in this classification supervise Carpenters, Carpenters Trim, skilled, semiskilled and unskilled laborers and helpers.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor or other designated higher-level staff. Work is performed at various State facilities. Employees in this classification may be required to work in elevated areas and may be required to lift heavy objects.
Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. This method compares the position’s assigned duties and responsibilities to the job criteria defined in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.
The Carpenter Supervisor is differentiated from the Carpenter Trim in that the Carpenter Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Carpenters while the Carpenter Trim is the advanced level of work in woodworking, precision cutting, fitting and finishing of wood.
Assigns construction, installation, alteration, removal, maintenance and repair work projects and tasks to employees;
Inspects and approves all completed work for compliance with the requirements of the work order and for adherence to trades standards;
Schedules and implements individualized on-the-job training programs for subordinates;
Keeps records of materials and supplies received, used and held in stock;
Conducts inventories of materials on hand and tools in use;
Estimates amount of hours, materials and supplies needed to complete a project;
Keeps abreast of developments in the trade through periodicals and manufacturers’ publications;
Performs highly skilled and intricate carpentry and trim work in the construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment and other articles made of wood or other related materials;
May provide recommendations concerning proposed purchase of equipment;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of the carpentry trade including the construction, installation, alteration, removal, maintenance and repair of wooden floors, walls, roofs, stairs, forms benches, shelves, cabinets, doors, windows, screens, signs and barricades;
Skill in carpentry and carpentry trim work;
Skill in the use and maintenance of carpentry and power tools, such as saws, hammers, drills, planers, joiners;
Ability to supervise Carpenters, Carpenters Trim, skilled, semiskilled and unskilled laborers and helpers;
Ability to schedule and assign work according to the requirements of project assignments;
Ability to estimate time, required materials and supplies needed to complete assignments;
Ability to prepare and work from sketches, blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications;
Ability to conduct on-the-job training programs for employees possessing varying degrees of skill;
Ability to maintain records of jobs completed and in progress.
Education: Completion of eighth grade.
Experience: Five years of experience in general carpentry work, two years of which must have been in finish or trim carpentry work or cabinetmaking or as a Master Carpenter.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute additional carpentry experience at a rate of one year of experience for two years of education for up to four years of the required education.
2. Graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a concentration in carpentry may be substituted for three years of the required experience.
3. Graduation from a vocational or technical trade school with a concentration in carpentry may be substituted for up to three years of the required general carpentry experience.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in builder classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the carpentry field of work, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.
This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
