A Psychologist Intern is the pre-doctoral, non -licensed level of psychology work. Employees in this classification serve an internship and receive education and training in rendering psychological services to residents, patients or clients in State institutions or programs. Employees in this classification are trained in performing psychological evaluations and specific duties are determined by the program objectives of the hiring agency or institution in dealing with problems related to mental health, emotional disturbances, developmental disabilities and other conditions. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.
Employees in this classification receive close supervision from a licensed psychologist. The work is performed in State mental hospitals, community clinics, health centers, residential centers and emergency services programs.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.
Receives training in conducting individual, group, family and milieu therapy in hospitals, clinics or residential centers;
Receives training in selecting, administering, scoring and interpreting psychological tests to assess intellectual functioning, personality structure, interests, aptitudes and other psychological factors;
Receives training in carrying out various forms of environmental manipulation, socialization experiences and other psychological procedures to effect changes in behavior;
Learns to maintain therapy progress notes;
Participates in staff meetings and learns to discuss and evaluate adjustment of inmates, patients or clients and to formulate treatment and rehabilitation plans;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of psychology;
Knowledge of strategies of scholarly inquiry;
Knowledge of the social sciences as they pertain to issues of cultural and individual diversity relevant to the practice of psychology;
Ability to receive training in clinical psychological work, including using psychological interviewing techniques, performing diagnostic evaluations, and conducting psychotherapy;
Ability to learn to prepare comprehensive, concise and useful diagnostic and treatment reports and evaluations;
Ability to communicate and work effectively with others.
Education: Enrollment in a Doctorate level psychology program as defined by Health Occupations Article, 18-101 (g), Annotated Code of Maryland and eligible for internship as determined by an accredited college, university or professional school.
Experience: None.
1. Candidates for this classification may be given a medical examination to determine their ability to perform job related functions.
2. Candidates for this classification must complete the Psychologist Intern program, the equivalent of one year of full-time training, in no less than 12 months and no more than 24 months.

This is a Professional Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Professional Service positions. Some positions in Professional Service classifications may be designated as Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit F- Social and Human Service Professionals classes. As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial, and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
