This is work at the supervisory level in a State institutional laundry. This employee serves either as the assistant to a Laundry Manager or is in charge of an institutional laundry facility processing in excess of 50,000 pounds of laundry per month.

This employee organizes and supervises the work of the laundry. The employee must be familiar with modern laundry processes, techniques and equipment. The employee is responsible for maintaining an adequate supply of clean laundry and linens, for maintaining a high standard of finished work and for the safety of the assigned employees, inmate and/or patient helpers.

General direction is received from a Laundry Manager or designated administrative personnel. Work effectiveness is evaluated through review of the quantity and quality of finished work, operational cost factors and safety records of laundry personnel. Close supervision is exercised over assigned employees, inmate and/or patient helpers.

Trains, assigns and supervises employees, inmate and/or patient helpers assigned to laundry operations including: pick-up delivery services; weighing; sorting; washing, extracting, finishing, packaging; keeping records and maintaining supplies and equipment;

Plans and organizes work schedules to meet necessary requirements;

Revises and improves operational methods and procedures as necessary;

Determines need for supplies and equipment and issues requisitions for same;

Supervises the use and preparation of proper amounts of soap, starch, bluing and other laundry compounds and supplies;

Prepares and submits reports concerning production, efficiency and conduct of employees, accidents and other reports as required.

Elementary knowledge of modern laundry processes, techniques and equipment including heavy duty washing machines, extractors, dryers, flat ironers, and pressing units; of the preparation of compounds used in washing and finishing clothes and fabrics;

Introduction to the principles and practices of laundry management;

Ability to manage a complete laundry operation; to organize, coordinate, train supervise the work of employees, inmate and/or patient helpers; to analyze and improve operational procedures; to work harmoniously with representatives of other institutions; to prepare reports; to prepare reports; to make clear and pertinent statements; to think clearly and exercise forceful initiative in emergency situations.

Education: Completion of the eighth grade

Experience: Four years of experience in a laundry similar to an institutional or commercial linen supply laundry, one year of which must have included some supervisory responsibility.

Note: 

1. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Experience in a coin-operated laundry is not qualifying

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Laundry and Ship Serviceman classifications or Laundry specialty codes in the laundry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
