A Mason-Plasterer is plastering-masonry work at the journeyman level at State facilities. Employees in this classification are responsible for performing maintenance operations, repairs, alterations and minor construction work on walls, ceilings, partitions, floors, walkways, curbs and other structures requiring the application of plastering or simple masonry techniques. Employees in this classification perform work assignments that may involve the use of plastering tools, masonry tools, plaster, mortar, concrete, bricks, blocks or stone. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions but may occasionally oversee the work of lower-level personnel assigned to or assisting in projects.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a designated physical plant foreman or other designated agency officer. Work effectiveness is determined through observation of completed work in terms of quality and appearance.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.
Applies rough and finish coats of plaster to interior walls, ceilings, and partitions;
Plasters damaged walls and ceilings;
Lays, finishes and repairs concrete walls, curbing and steps;
Performs some black and brickwork in repairing door and window openings, catch basins, gutters and chimneys;
Mixes, lays and finishes concrete work on yards, walls and interior floors;
Performs other necessary duties as required.
Knowledge of plastering methods and the use of related tools;
Knowledge of brick and block construction and repair methods;
Knowledge of mortar mixes and concrete work methods;
Ability to perform plastering and simple masonry jobs that are structurally correct and have a good appearance;
Ability to prepare simple reports and requisition supplies as needed;
Ability to supervise lower level employees when necessary;
Ability to follow instructions.
Education: Eighth grade.
Experience: Three years experience in plastering and masonry work.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in builder classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the masonry field of work, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit A, Labor and Trades classes. As provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
