NATURE OF WORK

This is the experienced and proficient level of cartographic drafting work. Employees in this classification perform complex drafting of various maps on emulsion coated plastics with specialized drafting tools. Work includes the preparation of color separation overlays with stick-up lettering and symbols of the cultured features. As they gain experience and training employees in this class may assist in the training of less experienced workers.

Workers at this level receive moderate direction from higher level employees in the unit.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plots changes and revisions in roads, water features, boundaries, and culture from plans, aerial photographs, topographic maps, field inventory and correspondence and makes appropriate entries on base maps for transposition to map manuscript impressions;

Scribes on emulsion coated plastics, on which manuscript map impressions have been transposed with special scribing tools using precise line tolerances usually smaller than .010 inch;

Prepares color separation overlays with stick-up lettering and symbols of the cultured features in required positions;

Inspects and touches up features on the map manuscript that do not meet reproduction requirements;

Drafts revisions of ink line manuscripts maps using precise line tolerances;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, plane geometry, and English;

Knowledge of the computations of survey plotting; Knowledge of scale conversions through grid and map projections;

Skill in the use and care of scribing drafting tools;

Ability to make mathematical computations;

Ability to perform graphic art work;

Ability to scribe and make ink drawings with neatness and accuracy;

Ability to train and instruct lower level drafters;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience in cartographic drafting.
