NATURE OF WORK

A Data Entry Operator Supervisor is the supervisory level of work keying large amounts of data from source documents into a computer or onto magnetic tape or disk according to a production schedule.  Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Data Entry Operators.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Data Entry Operator Manager I or other designated administrator.  Employees in this classification may be assigned to work day, evening or night shifts which may include weekends and holidays.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Data Entry Operator Supervisor is differentiated from the Data Entry Operator Lead in that the Data Entry Operator Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Data Entry Operators while the Data Entry Operator Lead assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level Data Entry Operators.  The Data Entry Operator Supervisor is differentiated from the Data Entry Operator Manager I in that the Data Entry Operator Manager I has supervisory responsibility for Data Entry Operator Supervisors.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of lower-level Data Entry Operators;

Trains lower-level Data Entry Operators;

Reviews, prioritizes, and schedules work assignments and monitors work flow to meet production requirements and customer needs;

Batches incoming work to identify, organize and control the work of the data entry unit;

Maintains work production and operator performance statistics to track and evaluate the work of the data entry unit;

Prepares data entry operator instructions and procedures to facilitate work assignments;

Operates a data entry system control console to transmit data to a host computer;

Assists lower-level Data Entry Operators with equipment and screen problems;

Ensures that files for completed jobs are complete and have been verified and terminated according to standards;

Calculates inventory and equipment needs for current and future data entry work assignments;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of data entry procedures and practices;

Skill in keying data from source documents into a computer or onto magnetic tape or disk according to a production schedule;

Skill in classifying and coding data according to agency operating procedures;

Ability to plan, coordinate, supervise and evaluate the activities of lower-level Data Entry Operators;

Ability to resolve data entry equipment and screen problems;

Ability to perform data entry functions using computer systems;

Ability to understand and follow instructions; Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers;

Ability to activate, save and deactivate data entry devices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience keying large amounts of alpha, numeric or symbolic data from source documents into a computer or onto magnetic tape or disk according to a production schedule.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional clerical experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or in Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the clerical support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit as indicated by the designation of S (supervisor), M (manager), T (agency head), U (Board or Commission member), W (student), X (excluded by agency), or Z (confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and therefore, all positions in those agencies are excluded form collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
