NATURE OF WORK

A Sheet Metal Worker is the full performance level of work in the layout, fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of sheet metal products.

Employees in this classification do not supervise other skilled trade worker positions.   Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor or other supervisory position.  Employees may be subject to call-in on a 24-hour basis.  The work may be performed in extremes of heat and cold and employees may be exposed to noisy, dirty and uncomfortable conditions.  The work may require the use of protective equipment such as masks and respirators when working around asbestos and goggles, masks and gloves when cutting, welding, soldering and grinding metals.  The work may require working in confined spaces, at different heights and moving objects in excess of 50 pounds.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Lays out, fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs various sheet metals such as steel, stainless steel, cast iron, tin, copper, brass, aluminum and other metals and metal alloys;

Welds, solders and brazes sheet metals;

Installs, repairs and replaces metal roofs, gutters, valleys, aprons, flashing and ceilings;

Cuts, forms and bends a variety of sheet metal items such as metal panels, ductwork, containers, hand rails, machine guards, saddles for doors, covers for electric controls and boxes, serving lines, stainless steel kitchen items and steps and lift gates on trucks, vans, buses and other automotive equipment;

Designs, lays out, makes, and installs ducts;

Repairs and replaces steel doors, seclusion screens, detention screens and stainless steel wirecloth;

Reads, interprets and works from plans, simple drawings, specifications, sketches and blueprints;

Designs and makes automatic shutters for exhaust fans and metal window screens;

Repairs food wagons, lids, castors, and bumpers, metal lockers, filing cabinets, and metal desks; Installs shafts, fans, bearings, and screens;

May lay out, design and fabricate special order sheet metal items;

May repair and replace a variety of roofs including slate, coal, tar, asphalt, shingle and rubberized roofs;

May inspect and report on the condition of roofs;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and techniques used in the layout, fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of sheet metal products;

Knowledge of the properties of metals and metal alloys commonly used in sheet metal work;

Knowledge of welding, soldering and brazing techniques and equipment;

Skill in the safe use and maintenance of manual and power tools and equipment used in sheet metal work, such as shears, benders, saws, punchers, grinders, welding equipment, drills and screw guns;

Skill in cutting and shaping sheet metals to specifications;

Skill in welding, soldering and brazing various sheet metals;

Ability to understand and follow work sheets, diagrams, blueprints and engineering specifications;

Ability to work from drawings and samples;

Ability to climb ladders and perform work on roofs and ceilings;

Ability to complete work orders, service and time records, reports and requisitions;

Ability to schedule work;

Ability to estimate time and material required on an assignment;

Ability to make rough sketches;

Ability to comprehend and follow instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   None.

Experience: Three years of experience in sheet metal work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school or other vocational/technical school with a concentration in sheet metal work for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in steel worker classifications or mechanical maintenance specialty codes in metal fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

NOT APPLICABLE.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24-hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification who are designated as Level I or Level II employees shall attend and successfully complete the appropriate asbestos safety and health training as required by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit A, Labor and Trades classes.  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
