A Housekeeping Supervisor III is the supervisory level of work responsible for the full range of housekeeping and custodial activities in a small or medium-sized State institution or other public building. Employees in this classification serve as the Executive Housekeeper for a small or medium sized institution or building and supervise lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors and building services staff.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from the institution’s director or a designated administrator. Employees may be required to work weekends and holidays based on staffing needs. Employees may be required to live on the grounds of the institution or agency.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification. Supervisory responsibility and the size of the institution are the primary determining factors for these positions.
The Housekeeping Supervisor III is differentiated from the Housekeeping Supervisor II in that the Housekeeping Supervisor III has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors and serves as the Executive Housekeeper at a small or medium sized State institution or other public building while the Housekeeping Supervisor II has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors and serves as the principal assistant to the Executive Housekeeper at a small or medium sized State institution or other public building. The Housekeeping Supervisor III is differentiated from the Housekeeping Supervisor IV in that the Housekeeping Supervisor IV has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors and serves as the Executive Housekeeper at a large State institution or other public building.
Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of lower-level housekeeping staff engaged in clothing, linen, custodial and inventory activities;
Trains lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors and housekeeping staff;
Plans, directs and coordinates custodial, housekeeping and linen supply activities at a State institution or other public building;
Reviews and evaluates the custodial, housekeeping and linen supply programs, and advises administrative staff on standards and procedures;
Recommends and implements changes in maintenance of inventory records, methods of cleaning, and/or purchase of materials and equipment;
Develops procedures for the distribution of linens and clothing;
Inspects all assigned public buildings, offices, patient areas, residences and living quarters to insure cleanliness and orderliness;
Plans, supervises and participates in the in-service training program for subordinate staff;
Maintains inventory records on linens, cleaning supplies and other materials;
Requisitions materials and equipment;
Confers with institution head on matters affecting the areas of responsibility;
Maintains records for the efficient operation of all housekeeping services;
Prepares required reports for review by supervisor;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in housekeeping and custodial operations;
Knowledge of the operation, use and care of equipment used in cleaning, maintaining and servicing of linen quarters;
Knowledge of the modern methods, materials and equipment used in the operation of a central linen supply service;
Knowledge of the methods used in requisitioning and maintenance of inventory records;
Ability to supervise lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors;
Ability to train staff in housekeeping operations;
Ability to plan and assign work related to housekeeping operations and coordinate the activities of employees engaged in a wide variety of custodial and housekeeping functions;
Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs and make sound recommendations on policy and procedural changes;
Ability to estimate and requisition large quantities of clothing items, linens, furniture and cleaning supplies;
Ability to maintain comprehensive records and prepare reports;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and building tenants;
Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with officials and the general public.
Education: None.
Experience: Two years of experience supervising housekeeping and custodial activities at a State institution or public building.
OR
Experience: Six years full-time experience in a housekeeping operation at a school, hospital, hotel or other institution, three years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
1. Employees in this classification may be required to be present for duty on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Employees required to work on those days will receive compensatory time off on other days.
2. Employees in this classification may be required to live on the grounds of the institution or agency.
Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.
This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit as indicated by the designation of S (supervisor), M (manager), T (agency head), U (Board or Commission member), W (student), X (excluded by agency), or Z (confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and therefore, all positions in those agencies are excluded form collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
