This is work at the operating level of efficiency involving the use of teletypewriter equipment. An employee in this class receives calls, verifies information or obtains requested information, and send messages. The employee may also operate radio and telephone switchboards. The employee performs miscellaneous clerical duties in connection with the handling and distribution of messages, particularly, the use of files for the obtaining of requested information.
An employee in this class works under general supervision on an assigned shift.
The employee does not normally have any supervisory responsibilities although the employee is required to report emergencies and unusual incidents to the supervisor.
Receives and transmits police alarms and messages via teletypewriter;
Requests or provides information from the Motor Vehicle Administration regarding: traffic records, statistics, title information, etc.;
Operates telephone switchboard and radio;
Files records and messages;
Performs other necessary duties as required.
Thorough knowledge of teletypewriter equipment;
General knowledge of the geography of Maryland; of modern office procedures; of police work;
Ability to type accurately from plain copy at a minimum of 20 words per minute; to carry out directions.
Education: Completion of a typing course.
Experience: Six months’ on-the-job satisfactory training as a teletypewriter operator; OR Experience: Two years’ experience as a typist or teletypewriter operator.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administrative classifications or in Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the clerical support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
