NATURE OF WORK

Armorer is the full performance level of technical work testing and evaluating all firearms and related items used or contemplated for use by Maryland State Police personnel. An employee in this class inspects all new weapons to insure proper operating condition and issues all weapons after certifying that they are safe and functional. Employees in this class do not supervise.

Employees receive general supervision from the sergeant in charge. The work requires that employees use protective equipment, such as hearing protectors, while performing tests that may involve firing weapons.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Inspects new weapons to insure proper operating condition;

Issues all weapons after certifying that they are safe and functional;

Evaluates confiscated weapons;

Dismantles weapons that are not to be sold;

Uses a personal computer to maintain inventory of weapons;

Repairs all weapons returned to the Supply Division for maintenance or arranges for warranty work by manufacturers;

Coordinates the logistics involved with the yearly inspection, repair, and adjustment or semi-automatic handguns;

Establishes an annual maintenance program to inspect for factory tolerances, and properly clean weapons;

Inspects all holsters and other leather items under consideration for use by sworn personnel;

Evaluates all ammunition contemplated for use by agency personnel;

Serves as liaison for the purchase of police equipment;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the characteristics of new firearms and ammunition;

Skill in the safe use of firearms;

Skill in operating specialized equipment and handtools used in the testing and repair of firearms;

Ability to repair, adjust, test, and dismantle firearms of various makes and models;

Ability to keep maintenance records and document findings of test results;

Ability to use a personal computer;

Ability to develop and maintain a routine maintenance schedule

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience repairing, adjusting, and testing firearms of various makes and models.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a certificate of satisfactory completion from two different manufacturer’s Armorer School and one factory rifle training school

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are subject to a background investigation by the Maryland State Police before a permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction record may be grounds for rejection of the applicant by the hiring agency.
