NATURE OF WORK

A Warehouse Assistant Supervisor is a supervisory level of work in warehousing.  Employees in this classification assist the Warehouse Supervisor in the immediate supervision of the daily activities of a State’s Central Warehouse.  Employees in this classification assist in the receipt, storage and distribution of supplies and materials, including non-perishable food stuffs, cleaning materials, household paper products, stationary supplies and other institutional and office consumable items, ordered into the Central Warehouse for future use of State agencies.  Employees in this classification participate in planning and scheduling the receipt and distribution of supplies and the development of safe and efficient storage methods.  Employees in this classification, in the absence of the Warehouse Supervisor, may assume full responsibility for the operation of the Central Warehouse.  Employees in this classification supervise several warehouse workers and may guide the work of inmate helpers from correctional institutions.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from the Warehouse Supervisor.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Warehouse Assistant Supervisor is differentiated from the Warehouse Supervisor in that Warehouse Assistant Supervisor assists the Warehouse Supervisor in the immediate supervision of the daily activities of a State Central Warehouse and has supervisory responsibility for several warehouse workers while the Warehouse Supervisor has full supervisory responsibility for the operation of a State Central Warehouse.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Assists in organizing and supervising the work of warehouse personnel;

Participates in the development of efficient, safe storage methods, including allocation and arrangement of storage facilities;

Maintains records incident to receipt and issuance of supplies and materials and inventory control;

Receives and processes supplies requisitioned and supervises the distribution of supplies;

Assists in scheduling of times for efficient receipt and distribution of supplies;

Takes actual physical inventories of supplies;

May direct the full range of activities of a State Central Warehouse, in the absence of the Warehouse Supervisor;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the purpose and function of a large supply warehouse;

Knowledge of methods and procedures used in the receipt, storage and distribution of supplies and materials;

Knowledge of the maintenance of perpetual inventory records;

Ability to organize, schedule and supervise the work of warehouse employees and specially selected inmate helpers from correctional institutions;

Ability to develop and install warehouse operation methods, procedures and record keeping systems;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, associates and subordinates;

Ability to train new employees;

Ability to prepare simple reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of successful and progressively responsible experience in the receipt, storage, issuance and purchase or requisition of supplies, materials and equipment.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Stock/Shipping Clerk and Stock Clerk Supervisor classifications or Supply Specialist and Service Specialist specialty codes in the stockroom field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which require the candidates to be examined by a physician after an offer of employment, candidates for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
