NATURE OF WORK

A Geologist Manager, Environmental Programs is the managerial level of professional geological work with a focus on environmental programs.  Employees in this classification function as managers over a division of professional Geologists and other environmental staff within an environmental program area.  Their leadership responsibilities focus on the administrative, legislative and technical aspects of developing and maintaining environmental programs.  Employees in this classification directly supervise Geologist Supervisors, Environmental Programs who supervise lower-level professional Geologists.

Employees in this classification receive managerial supervision from a Program Manager or other designated manager.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Geologist Manager, Environmental Programs is differentiated from the Geologist Supervisor, Environmental Programs in that the Geologist Manager, Environmental Programs has supervisory responsibility for Geologist Supervisors, Environmental Programs and a division of professional Geologists and other environmental staff while the Geologist Supervisor, Environmental Programs has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Geologists.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Provides divisional oversight and project leadership on significant, highly visible or controversial environmental projects and issues;

Plans, coordinates, manages and evaluates the work of a division of professional Geologists and other environmental staff within an environmental program area;

Oversees administrative aspects of environmental investigations and projects including budget preparation and human resources planning;

Develops and reviews wellhead protection projects for funding from the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal funding sources;

Monitors divisional cost estimates for contractor services required for the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites;

Develops and implements divisional policies and procedures;

Reviews and approves divisional technical reports;

Represents the Department at public meetings and hearings;

Prepares correspondence and briefing materials for the Director’s or the Secretary’s signature;

Interprets State and federal environmental laws and regulations as they relate to State environmental projects and interests;

Testifies as a subject matter expert during administrative or legislative hearings and court trials on matters of environmental issues and policy;

Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: Experience supervising the work of professional staff in an environmental program.
