A Metal Maintenance Worker is full performance level work in metal working at State facilities. Employees in this classification install, remove, maintain and repair moderately complicated mechanical equipment, including locks and locking systems, metal security grilles and other structural, ornamental and/or reinforcing metal fixtures. Employees in this classification, in addition to grinding, brazing, welding and blacksmithing, are required to make the necessary mechanical adjustments fundamental to the proper functioning or any mechanical equipment which have been disassembled and then reassembled for the purpose of replacing broken or defective parts. Employees in this classification, on certain assignments, may work very closely with other journeyman tradesmen, such as Electricians and Carpenters and may act as lead workers to semi-skilled helpers, unskilled workers and/or patients or inmates.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision assignments from a supervisor or foreman, and in turn may act as lead men to semi-skilled helpers, unskilled workers, and/or assigned patients or inmates.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.
Repairs, replaces and adjusts locks and locking systems;
Cuts keys;
Installs and repairs heavy grilles for use in correctional institutions, and also installs and repairs structural and ornamental metal work at various facilities, using welding and brazing equipment as necessary;
Repairs window opening mechanisms and security fasteners;
Uses hoists, cranes, jacks, crowbars, wooden blocking and other rigging equipment or move heavy machinery or metal work;
Assembles simple and moderately complicated mechanical equipment; connects belts and attaches motors;
Replaces broken and defective parts;
Fits bearings and aligns wheels and gears, and effects other adjustments as necessary;
May sketch parts which must be specially fabricate at distant shops;
May fabricate structural and ornamental metal work;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of the thorough properties of metals and metal alloys commonly used in building construction and decoration, and in mechanical equipment;
Knowledge of the general composition and quality of lubricants;
Skill in mechanical aptitude;
Ability to act as lead worker;
Ability to follow blueprints, lubrication charts and engineering specifications;
Ability to utilize correctly parts catalogs to requisition equipment parts;
Ability to use micrometers, calipers, gauges, levels and squares;
Ability to use brazing and welding equipment;
Ability to use regular and special wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, grinders, sharpening equipment, lubrication equipment and other assorted general purpose and specialized stationary and portable manual and electrical tools;
Ability to keep service and time records;
Ability to make routine reports;
Ability to schedule work;
Ability to estimate time and material required on an assignment;
Ability to make rough sketches.
Education: Completion of Eighth grade.
Experience: Four years of successful full-time work experience paid employment in any combination of one or more of the following areas of work: Building Machinery Repair; Industrial Machinery Repair; General Machine Shop; Locksmithing; Millwrighting; Structural-Iron Work or Ornamental-Iron Work.
Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.
This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit A- Labor and Trades classes. As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial, and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
