A Deputy Sheriff Major is one of two managerial levels of work serving court and legal process orders of the Circuit Court of Baltimore City and the District Court of Maryland; relocating, safeguarding and escorting witnesses in the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Witness Protection Program; and targeting violent offenders, career criminals and drug kingpins in task forces and joint operations with federal law enforcement authorities, Baltimore City police and other local police agencies. Employees in this classification supervise Deputy Sheriff Captains.
Employees in this classification receive managerial direction from the Deputy Sheriff Colonel. The work requires travel throughout Baltimore City, Maryland and other states. The work may involve contact with dangerous or hostile persons who may be armed. Employees are subject to call-in on a regularly scheduled basis.

The Deputy Sheriff Major is differentiated from the Deputy Sheriff Captain in that the Deputy Sheriff Major serves as the Chief of Operations of the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office and on a daily basis has command oversight of all operational components of the agency while the Deputy Sheriff Captain has management responsibility for lower-level Deputy Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriff Sergeants through the direct supervision of Deputy Sheriff Lieutenants at the bureau level of the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office.
Manages the work of Deputy Sheriffs through the supervision of Deputy Sheriff Captains;
Serves as the Chief of Operations and provides oversight of the major operational bureaus in the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office;
Administers the total operating budget, provides administrative oversight for specific bureau operating budgets and testifies before the Baltimore City Board of Estimates on budget matters;
Recommends the development of new policies or modifications to current policies and procedures in order to effect an efficient and effective operation;
Ensures that new staff receives the proper training within the mandated time frames and that current staff meets in-service training and certification requirements;
Controls access to agency computer systems; monitors computer usage and controls activities through subordinate command staff to ensure that system integrity are maintained;
Approves in-service training courses and lesson plans before submission to the Maryland Police and Correctional Training and Standards Commission;
Approves the acquisition of uniforms and equipment and ensures that the applicable reports and records are prepared and maintained;
Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff Colonel when necessary;
Performs other related duties.
Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training and Standards Commission regulation.
Experience: Specific experience requirements are set by the agency based on the essential job functions assigned to the position.
