This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of marine vessels, engines and equipment operated by the Maryland Port Administration.
This employee assures the serviceability and safety of boats and equipment by conducting routine inspections and, depending upon the deficiency detected, either making or recommending necessary repairs. Responsibilities may also include preparing cost estimates for specialized or major repairs and supervising the repair work when performed under contract by commercial boatyards.
The employee works under general supervision. Employees in this classification do not supervise.
Inspects, dismantles, repairs and replaces broken or worn parts in gasoline or diesel marine engines;
Assembles, adjusts and tests all types of engines, tuning gears, transmissions, brakes, clutches, differentials, magnetos, carburetors and electrical units;
Keeps records of repairs made and of equipment used and parts requisitioned;
Prepares cost estimates of necessary maintenance and repairs of equipment and develops measures for reducing such costs;
Assists in the preparation of specifications and requisitions for the purchase of new equipment;
May be required to operate boats and related equipment;
Performs other necessary duties as required.
Working knowledge of the construction of boats and their maintenance and repair; of construction of diesel and gasoline inboard marine engines and gasoline out board engines and their maintenance and repair; of assembling parts; of general ships carpentry;
Ability to maintain records, make reports, and prepare cost estimates; to repair and refuel all types of marine engines.
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of boats and of gasoline and/or diesel engines.
Note: Additional experience as required, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the high school education provided the candidate has completed the eighth grade.
