NATURE OF WORK

A Claims Reviewer Supervisor is the supervisory level of work processing workers' compensation claims. Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Claims Reviewers.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from an administrative officer.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.

The Claims Reviewer Supervisor is differentiated from the Claims Reviewer II in that the Claims Reviewer Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Claims Reviewers while the Claims Reviewer II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of a team of Claims Reviewers and clerical support staff involved in processing workers' compensation claims;

Trains lower-level Claims Reviewers and support staff in the application of workers' compensation law and agency guidelines and procedures;

Recommends and implements changes in operating procedures to enhance the day to day operation of the unit;

Explains workers' compensation laws and procedures to claimants and other interested parties;

Responds to inquiries and problems from claimants, attorneys, health care providers, insurers and legislators concerning workers' compensation claims and procedures;

Reviews and processes complex claims filed under the Workers' Compensation Act;

Prepares statistical and narrative reports to document unit activity;

Composes and reviews correspondence on workers' compensation claims;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of workers' compensation laws, rules and procedures;

Knowledge of office methods, organization, management and operation;

Ability to plan, coordinate, supervise and evaluate the work of lower-level Claims Reviewers and support staff;

Ability to interpret, explain and apply workers' compensation laws, rules, procedures and practices;

Ability to evaluate factual information, identify issues and problems, and recommend the most appropriate corrective action;

Ability to communicate effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience processing workers' compensation claims.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional general clerical experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Workers’ Compensation Claims Examining classifications or Workers’ Compensation Claims Examining specialty codes in the Legal and Kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  This classification is supervisory and exempt from bargaining. As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial, and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
