NATURE OF WORK

A Speech Pathologist/Audiologist II is the full-performance level of professional work in the treatment of persons with speech, language and hearing disorders.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions but may provide guidance and advice to less experienced staff members.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a higher- level licensed Speech-Language Pathologist or Audiologist or other designated official.  The work takes place in local health departments, community clinics and health centers, or in State hospitals and institutions.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Speech Pathologist/Audiologist I and Speech Pathologist/Audiologist II are differentiated on the basis of license and supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees.  The Speech Pathologist/Audiologist I is not licensed as a Speech-language Pathologist or Audiologist and learns to perform duties under close supervision.  The Speech Pathologist/Audiologist II is licensed as a Speech-language Pathologist or Audiologist and performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.  The Speech Pathologist/Audiologist II is differentiated from the Speech Pathologist/Audiologist III in that the Speech Pathologist/Audiologist III performs the advanced level or lead level of work and coordinate a segment of a large speech-language and hearing program.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Administers speech, language and hearing diagnostic evaluations;

Conducts speech, language and hearing treatment;

Evaluates patients’ progress and reaction to treatment and determines the nature of treatment indicated by the evaluation;

Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports of hearing, language and speech evaluations, treatment, results, and prognoses;

Participates in staff meetings to evaluate speech and hearing treatment plans for patients, clients or inmates;

Assists in the development of research studies through literature review, collection of data, preliminary analysis and case record review;

Participates in training of students and nonprofessional personnel;

May provide guidance to other staff members and community agencies;

May participate in programs providing special community services;

Perform other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of speech-language pathology or audiology;

Knowledge of the operation and care of equipment use in the practice of speech-language pathology or audiology;

Ability to perform speech, language and hearing evaluations and treatment;

Ability to recognize changes in patients and to revise their treatment program as indicated;

Ability to prepare and deliver reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Set by the licensing requirements of the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers & Speech-Language Pathologists.

Experience: Set by the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers & Speech-Language Pathologists.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license from the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispenser & Speech-Language Pathologists, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification must renew their license in accordance with Health Occupation Article, Title 2 Audiology, or Title 19 Speech-Language Pathology of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Professional Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Professional Service positions. Some positions in Professional Service classifications may be designated as Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit E, Health Care Professionals classes.  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

This classification is one level in a Non-Competitive Promotion (NCP) series.  NCP promotions are promotions by which employees may advance in grade and class level from trainee to full performance levels in a classification series.  In order to be non-competitively promoted to the next level in a NCP series an employee must: 1) perform the main purpose of the class as defined in the Nature of Work section of the class specification; 2) receive the type of supervision defined in the class specification, and 3) meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
