NATURE OF WORK

This is the experienced level of technical electronic maintenance and repair work. Employees in this class are required to repair and maintain standard and special purpose electronic pulsars, recorders, timers, identifiers, sensors, indicators or other equipment, including power supply units, and to measure and adjust frequency and deviation of related surveillance equipment. Employees must also assemble, install, and relocate toll recorders, key boxes, traffic signal and recording equipment and other related equipment.

General supervision is received from a higher-level Technician or supervisor. Work effectiveness is determined by the operational efficiency of equipment repair and maintenance projects assigned. Employees in this class do not supervise other employees.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Repairs, maintains, tests, assembles and installs toll recording equipment, traffic detection surveillance and signaling devices, intercoms, paging and public address systems, noxious gas analyzers, electronic clock systems, receipt printers, and other electronic equipment;

Installs detectors on roadways, poles and bridges (may require climbing, working from lift cradles and other equipment in high places);

Calibrates transmitters, checks for frequency deviations;

Replaces defective components, tubes, relays, capacitors, resistors, transistors, thermostats, solenoids, timers, pulsars, sequential counters, motors, neon and incandescent indicators and other related electronic equipment;

Uses power hand tools;

Operates electronic test equipment for locating trouble in electronic components, traces circuits and checks cables, maintains electronic test equipment;

Maintains necessary records;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of electronic theory and of the installation and testing of electronic equipment;

Knowledge of the care and use of required manual and power tools; of applicable safety precautions.

Knowledge of repair practices concerning electronic components and circuitry and related equipment.

Ability to make adjustments and repairs to electronic equipment as used in the operation of toll recording, traffic signaling, surveillance and other related equipment; to follow schematics,

Ability to use test equipment such as oscilloscopes and volt-ohm-amp meters in detecting and locating malfunctions; and to maintain such equipment;

Ability to use necessary manual and power tools to install and repair equipment;

Ability to keep simple records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

1. Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalency certificate.

2. Successful completion of a formal course in electronics theory, practice and equipment at a recognized school in electronics, radio, or television repair.

Experience: Two years of experience in electronic equipment, radio, or television repair.

Note: Applicants may substitute additional experience in electronic repair work or formal schooling in electronics, on a year-for-year basis, for up to two years of required high school education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Persons appointed to this position may, in some departments, be subject to call twenty-four hours a day in emergencies.
