This is technical electronic development and repair work at the supervisory level. The main purpose of a position in this class is to exercise responsibility for proper functioning of all toll recording, traffic surveillance, or other electronic equipment at a large State facility. Employees in this classification are required to supervise a staff engaged in the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of standard and special purpose electronic toll recording, traffic surveillance, or other types of electronic equipment in accordance with departmental policies and local codes and regulations. In addition, the employee is expected to participate in performing skilled electronic technician work. Employees in this classification may be requested to design and construct special purpose equipment and to participate in planning new technical improvements, adaptations or additions.

General supervision is received from a departmental chief or other designated official. Work effectiveness is determined through conferences, review of written reports and by the operational efficiency of equipment at his assigned facility. Direct supervision is exercised over lower level technicians, mechanics, and other assigned personnel

Schedules, directs and coordinates the work of subordinate technicians;

Inspects on-sight preventive maintenance programs;

Provides analysis of, and procedures for solving technical problems and implementing new programs;

Ensures that installation and repair of electronic equipment complies with department policy and local codes and regulations;

Evaluates existing shop procedures in terms of efficiency and provides supervision for lower level technicians;

Maintains supply of necessary repair parts and components;

Keeps repair and supply records;

Checks accuracy of test equipment;

Drafts details and prepares diagrams of new technical improvements, additions or adoptions; fabricates special purpose equipment;

Maintains, modifies and constructs electronic test equipment;

Makes recommendations concerning hiring or promoting of employees and the purchase of operating and testing equipment;

Performs other related duties.

Knowledge of electronic theory, maintenance, and repair practices; of the care and use of required manual and power tools and of applicable safety precautions.

Knowledge of repair practices concerning toll-recording equipment, traffic surveillance equipment and/or other related electronic equipment; of modern methods of design, construction, and maintenance of electronic calculators, computers, recorders, or data processing devices.

Knowledge of local codes and regulations for electrical wiring and installation of electrical equipment.

Ability to supervise and train technical personnel;

Ability to supervise the keeping of permanent and temporary records in accordance with departmental policy; to prepare comprehensive reports;

Ability to use test equipment such as oscilloscopes, volt-ohm-amp meters and special purpose test equipment as used in the operation of toll recording, traffic signaling, surveillance, or other equipment;

Ability to follow schematics.

Education: 1. Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalency certificate.

2. Successful completion of a formal course in electronic theory, practice, and equipment at a recognized school in electronics, radio, or television repair.

Experience: Five years of experience in radio, television or electronics equipment repair, two years of which must have been in the repair and maintenance of electronic calculators, computers, recorders, or data processing devices.

Note: 1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in electronic repair work or formal schooling in electronics, on a year for year basis, for up to two years of required high school education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Electronics Mechanic classifications or Electronics Mechanic specialty codes in the Electronic Equipment Installation and Maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Persons appointed to this position may, in some departments, be subject to call twenty-four hours a day in emergencies.
