NATURE OF WORK

An Automotive Services Supervisor is the supervisory level of work in the field of automotive services. Employees in this classification have responsibility for a section of automotive services and supervise Automotive Services Specialists and Automotive Services Mechanics.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from designated personnel. Employees work is performed in a garage or outside in extremes of heat and cold. Employees may be exposed to hazardous chemicals. The work may require the use of protective equipment such as safety goggles, face shields and gloves when performing automotive services. The work may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects such as heavy automotive components.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification.

The Automotive Services Supervisor is differentiated from the Automotive Services Specialist in that the Automotive Services Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for Automotive Services Specialists and Automotive Services Mechanics while the Automotive Services Specialist performs advanced level automotive services.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises the activities of a large garage, shop or automotive maintenance facility;

Supervises Automotive Services Specialists and other staff;

Plans and implements the preventive maintenance program for motor vehicles and motor equipment;

Plans the scheduling and dispatching of motor vehicle operators;

Coordinates the repair work and maintenance schedule;

Inspects automotive equipment to determine the extent and type of servicing or repair work necessary;

Conducts diagnostic tests using automotive computer technology;

Determines the feasibility of repairing equipment at the facility or sending it outside the facility for repair;

Reviews completed jobs for adherence to acceptable standards of quality and timeliness;

Requisitions, stores, secures, distributes and supervises the use of equipment, materials, tools, replacement parts, gasoline, oil, tires and other supplies;

Maintains records and files concerning personnel, equipment, materials, time sheets and job sheets;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the procedures, methods, tools and equipment used in the service, maintenance, repair and adjustment of motor vehicles and motor equipment;

Knowledge of automotive electronic systems such as, circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software related to automotive diagnostic procedures;

Knowledge of the proper techniques of assignment, scheduling and use of vehicles and operators;

Knowledge of the procedures for requisitions and the maintenance of inventory and shop records;

Knowledge of the methods and procedures used to keep maintenance facilities in a clean, orderly and safe condition;

Skill in the use of standard and specialized power tools and equipment;

Ability to organize, schedule, coordinate and supervise other employees in the service, maintenance, repair and adjustment of motor vehicles and motor equipment;

Ability to diagnose motor vehicle malfunctions and make decisions concerning the feasibility of their repair or replacement;

Ability to run diagnostic tests;

Ability to understand and carry out instructions;

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing of motor vehicles or motor equipment two years of which must have involved responsibility for performing major automotive repair work.

Notes:

1. Graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in automotive mechanics, or a related field, may be substituted for up to three years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mechanic classifications or Automotive Maintenance Technician and Vehicle Maintenance specialty codes in the Mechanic or Maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.    

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.  

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
