NATURE OF WORK

A Natural Resources Police Lieutenant Colonel is one of four managerial levels of law enforcement work in the department of Natural Resources (DNR) enforcing State and federal law and departmental rules and regulations as they apply to conservation, boating, DNR managed lands, criminal, civil and traffic violations. An employee in this classification has statewide responsibility for all natural resources law enforcement operations. An employee in this classification directly supervises Natural Resources Police Majors and through them indirectly supervises other natural resources police officers.

Employees receive managerial supervision from the Superintendent Natural Resources Police. Employees are subject to call-in 24-hours a day during emergencies and staffing shortages. Employees in this classification may be subject to assignment in any area of the State.

Natural Resources Police Lieutenant Colonel is differentiated from Natural Resources Police Major in that a Natural Resources Police Lieutenant Colonel has managerial responsibility for all law enforcement operations statewide as effected through subordinate Natural Resources Police Majors.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, organizes and directs the work of Natural Resources Police Majors;

Directs all statewide natural resources law enforcement operations;

Directs the preparation and management of a budget;

Prepares and reviews short and long range plans affecting the direction of the natural resources police force;

Reviews financial, statistical, operational and special reports;

Approves requests for supplies, materials and equipment;

Directs the development and implementation of new and revised operating policies;

Coordinates natural resources police activities with other divisions within the Department of Natural Resources and with outside agencies;

Directs the preparation of new or revised legislative bills and fiscal notes;

Provides guidance and direction to natural resources police officers and other subordinate employees statewide;

Performs other duties as required.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.Specific educational and experience requirements and other selection standards are set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207 and are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04. Specific experience requirements are set by the agency based on the essential job functions assigned to the position. 2.Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
