This is storekeeping and clerical work in a highway engineering district within the State Highway Administration. These positions are located in the major shops of an engineering district. Employees in this classification do not supervise.
An employee in this class serves as the principal clerk and is responsible for the proper receipt, storage, and issuance of equipment, supplies and materials; for the maintenance of inventory records; and for the preparation of purchase requisitions for stock replacement. Also the employee performs a wide variety of clerical tasks required in an engineering district, such as the preparation of maintenance records, equipment records and other administrative records and reports. The employee works independently in determining work methods for these functions.
General supervision is received from the Resident Maintenance Engineer, Highway Maintenance Supervisor, or other designated authority. Work effectiveness is determined by periodic inspection of facilities, physical inventory, and review and audit of stock records and controls.
Prepares requisitions for stock replacement;
Receives parts and supplies and supervises the distribution of same;
Takes physical inventory of supplies and materials on hand;
Maintains inventory records, including records pertaining to gasoline, oil, tires, batteries, chains, spark plugs, foul-weather gear, shovels, etc.;
May prepare a variety of highway maintenance records and reports;
May prepare miscellaneous clerical reports such as accident reports;
Receives and transmits messages over the radio;
May process minor personnel reports and forms;
Processes invoices for inventory control and payment processing;
May make auto trips to purchase emergency parts;
Maintains stockroom and office in a clean and orderly condition;
May dispense petroleum products;
Prepares correspondence, as required;
May maintain property control records;
Performs other related duties.
Working knowledge of storekeeping methods and procedures;
Working knowledge of the maintenance of stock records and inventory controls;
Working knowledge of purchase and requisition procedures;
Working knowledge of methods involved in receiving, storing and issuing supplies;
Elementary knowledge of business English and arithmetic;
Elementary knoweldge of office clerical procedures;
Elementary knowledge of office equipment such as calculators, duplicators, and photocopies;
Ability to maintain supply records and prepare reports;
Ability to maintain employee personnel records, including time reports and leave;
Ability to conduct physical inventory audits;
Ability to analyze the needs for transfer of stock;
Ability to recognize and report occurrences of misuse and embezzlement;
Ability to perform clerical tasks of moderate complexity;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates;
Ability to perform light manual labor.
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalence certificate.
Experience: One year of full-time experience, or its equivalent, in the Maryland State classification of Shop Clerk.
OR Experience: Three years of full-time clerical experience, or its equivalent, in receiving, storing, and issuing supplies, materials, or equipment in a storeroom, warehouse, or other supply storage facility.
Note: Applicants may substitute on a year-for-year basis additional experience as described above for the required high school education.
