NATURE OF WORK

A Vision and Hearing Screening Technician, Lead is the lead level of vision and hearing screening work for a local health department.  Employees in this classification  assign, review and approve the work of and train lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians and assigned clerical and volunteer staff.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor II or a health professional.  The work requires the lifting of heavy equipment.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work of the class specification.

The Vision and Hearing Screening Technician, Lead is differentiated from the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician in that the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician, Lead assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians while the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.  The Vision and Hearing Screening Technician, Lead is differentiated from the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician, Supervisor I in that the Vision and Hearing Technician Supervisor I has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians, volunteers and clerical staff assigned to the program.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Schedules, trains, assigns and reviews the work of lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians and volunteer and clerical staff;

Assists the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor in preparing the budget;

Assists the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor in planning, developing and implementing vision and screening procedures;

Conducts hearing and vision screenings of preschool and school age children, and individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities at schools and community health facilities;

Maintains records, schedules appointments, prepares correspondence and files;

Maintains inventory of materials;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the principles and practices of vision and hearing screening;

Skill in operating and caring for vision and hearing screening equipment;

Ability to train, assign and review the work of lower level staff;

Ability to follow instructions; Ability to communicate effectively;

Ability to work effectively with the public and co workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience operating audiometric and vision screening equipment in a vision and hearing screening program.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience operating audiometric and vision screening equipment in a vision and hearing screening program on a year‑for‑year basis for up to four years of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Optometrist and Audiologist classifications or Optometrist or Audiologist specialty codes in the Optometry and Audiology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this classification may be given a medical examination and required to demonstrate the ability to perform the work required of the position prior to appointment.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit D- Health and Human Service Nonprofessional classes.  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
