NATURE OF WORK

A Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor II is the supervisory level of vision and hearing screening work.  Employees in this classification supervise the staff of the vision and hearing screening program for a local health department to include six or more lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians, as well as assigned clerical and volunteer staff.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a health professional or administrative official.  The work may require the lifting of heavy equipment.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work of the class specification.

The Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor II is differentiated from the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor I in that the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor II has supervisory responsibility for six or more lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians while the Vision and Hearing Screening Technician Supervisor I has supervisory responsibility for one to five lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises the vision and hearing screening program for a local health department consisting of six or more lower-level Vision and Hearing Screening Technicians and other assigned staff;

Plans, develops and implements vision and hearing screening procedures;

Prepares and monitors the program budget;

Schedules vision and hearing screenings;

Conducts and participates in staff meetings to discuss screening results;

Consults with health care professionals, educators and families regarding screening results and makes referrals for medical services;

Conducts and participates in seminars and in service training programs;

Participates in development of vision and hearing screening program standards to be followed by all local county health departments;

Prepares statistical reports of screening activities;

May conduct vision and hearing screenings of preschool and school age children, and individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities at schools and community health facilities;
Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the principles and practices of vision and hearing screening;

Skill in operating and caring for vision and hearing screening equipment;

Skill in communicating effectively;

Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;

Ability to prepare and monitor the program budget;

Ability to prepare and collect data and prepare statistical reports;

Ability to work effectively with health care professionals, educators and the public in promoting the vision and hearing screening program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience operating audiometric and vision screening equipment in a vision and hearing screening program.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience operating audiometric and vision screening equipment in a vision and hearing screening program on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Optometrist and Audiologist classifications or Optometrist or Audiologist specialty codes in the Optometry and Audiology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this classification may be given a medical examination and required to demonstrate the ability to perform the work required of the position prior to appointment.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
