NATURE OF WORK

An Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Photographer is the full performance level of work photographing various emergency medical activities, such as medical evacuations, paramedics, hospital emergency rooms, trauma patients, laboratories, cadavers, accident and crime scenes.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a designated program administrator.  Work is performed in an office, photographic laboratory, hospitals, medivac helicopters and outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.  Employees are exposed to hazardous substances including photographic chemicals and contaminated body fluids.  Employees may be required to wear protective equipment.  The work requires the moving and transporting of audio-visual equipment, such as cameras, film, tripods, video camcorders, audio decks and battery belts.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Photographs Emergency Medical Services personnel at accident and crime scenes, training events, ceremonies and social events;

Photographs patients and hospital medical staff in a variety of hospital settings to include surgical operating rooms, laboratories, and conference rooms;

Photographs pages from books, journals, and other photographs using copy stand photography techniques to produce black and white or color slides;

Designs and creates computer generated slides;

Operates and maintains a variety of photographic equipment;

Develops and prints color and black and white photographs using an in-house photographic laboratory;

Mixes photographic chemicals, operates film and print processors and photographic enlarger in order to produce photographs;

Creates “diazo” slides and superimposes letters over standard slides to produce title slides;

Operates a high speed audio-cassette duplicator machine to make dubs of slide tape presentations;

Performs other related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of photography methods and techniques;

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of camera equipment and attachments;

Knowledge of the methods and techniques of developing and printing color and black and white films;

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of audio-visual equipment;

Skill in the composition of subject matter being photographed;

Skill in the operation of various types of cameras and camera equipment;

Skill in the operation of photographic enlarger, film and print processors;

Skill in mounting and lamination of flat art for exhibits and displays;

Ability to develop negatives and print photographs;

Ability to use a light meter to determine camera setting and exposure time;

Ability to use computers and software to scan photographic images and produce slide shows.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years experience as a photographer including developing and printing color and black and white photographs.

Note: Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.  A minimum of 30 credit hours must be in the field of photography, mass communications or visual arts.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
