An Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Illustrator is the full performance level of work using computer assisted or hand drawn graphic designs or illustrations to produce publications, displays and charts. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a designated program administrator.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.
Prepares graphic designs and illustrations for the Emergency Medical Services program;
Prepares a variety of medical, scientific or technical material for books, booklets, pamphlets, charts, slides, exhibits and other printed material;
Designs and creates camera-ready art work by free hand line drawings or by using computer generated software;
Communicates with individuals from the medical profession or members of the scientific community in order to determine the type of designs or illustrations needed for their specific project;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of methods, techniques and procedures used in graphic design and illustrations;
Knowledge of art project production;
Knowledge of English grammar and usage;
Knowledge of layout design;
Knowledge of typesetting, typography, and print productions;
Skill in free hand drawing, layout and lettering techniques;
Skill in the use of computer software programs for graphic design, illustrations and commercial art;
Ability to communicate ideas to others;
Ability to convert technical, medical or scientific information into visual illustrations, charts, pictures, graphs;
Ability to manage work time efficiently in order to meet specific deadlines;
Ability to communicate effectively with others;
Ability to plan, and design visual materials used in books, pamphlets, charts, graphs, promotional materials, etc.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years experience as a commercial artist or Illustrator.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute additional education from an accredited college or university on a year- for- year basis for up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mass Communications Specialist classifications or Combat Documentation/Production Specialist or Combat Illustrator or Multimedia Illustrator specialty codes in the graphic design field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
