An Assistant Warden performs managerial work involving the administration of an adult correctional institution housing convicted and sentenced felons. Employees in this classification are responsible for directing program and operational services. Employees in this classification supervise Correctional Dietary Regional Managers, Correctional Maintenance Supervisors, Correctional Case Management Managers, Chaplains, Correctional Officer Managers, Correctional Security Chiefs and other staff.
Employees receive managerial direction from a Warden or other designated administrator. Employees are subject to call-in during emergency situations. Work is performed in a correctional institution and employees may be exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile.
The Assistant Warden differs from the Warden in that the Warden is the administrator of a correctional institution. The Assistant Warden is the principal assistant to the Warden.
Oversees the management of program and operational services such as security operations, correctional classification, social work, recreation, psychology, religious services, maintenance, food services and others for the inmate population;
Oversees the management and supervision of institutional personnel;
Develops policies and procedures in order to improve operations in a correctional institution;
Reviews recommendations made by correctional classification personnel in order to approve or disapprove changes in security operations, job assignments, program participation, and disciplinary action;
May coordinate the work release program and develop policies of which to ensure effectiveness in the release and return of inmates;
Handles problems and complaints from supervisory and managerial personnel;
May administer grievance decisions and employee discipline in accordance with Division of Correction and Department of Personnel rules and regulations;
Reviews correspondence directed to the institution and responds appropriately;
Attends task force meetings, and committees in order to supply or collect information and to discuss problems and issues affecting the institution;
Ensures that the institution is in compliance with all regulations of the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards;
Serves in the capacity of Warden, when necessary;
Performs other related duties.
