A Housekeeping Supervisor I is the supervisory level of work responsible for specific phases of housekeeping activities at a State institution or other public building. Employees in this classification supervise Building Services Workers.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a higher-level Housekeeping Supervisor or designated administrator. Employees may be required to work weekends and holidays based on staffing needs. Employees may be required to live on the grounds of the facility or agency.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification. Supervisory responsibility and the size of the institution are the primary determining factors for these positions.
The Housekeeping Supervisor I is differentiated from the Housekeeping Supervisor II in that the Housekeeper Supervisor I has supervisory responsibility for specific phases of housekeeping activities; while the Housekeeping Supervisor II has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Housekeeping Supervisors and serves as the principal assistant to an Executive Housekeeper in a small or medium sized institution or public building.
Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of Building Services Workers engaged in cleaning ward areas, dormitories, residences, administrative offices and/or employee living quarters;
Trains Building Services Workers;
Monitors housekeeping activities such as dusting furniture, scrubbing and waxing floors, and washing windows;
Inspects assigned areas to insure that work is performed in accordance with instructions;
Maintains records and prepares reports on personnel, supplies and equipment;
Estimates needs and requisitions supplies and equipment;
Issues uniforms, cleaning materials and supplies to cleaning staff;
May check the supply of linens issued to ward areas, school dormitories, residences, administrative offices and/or employee living quarters;
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge of housekeeping methods, practices and materials used in housekeeping operations;
Knowledge of equipment and supplies used in household management;
Knowledge of the methods used to requisition and maintain supply records;
Ability to plan, assign, supervise and inspect the work of subordinate employees;
Ability to train employees in housekeeping operations;
Ability to estimate and requisition large quantities of cleaning supplies;
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with officials and the general public.
Education: None.
Experience: Four years of experience performing housekeeping activities in a State facility or other public building.
OR
Experience: Four years of full-time experience as a housekeeper in a school, hospital, hotel, or other institution, to include one year of supervisory experience.
1. Employees in this classification may be required to be present for duty on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Employees required to work on those days will receive compensatory time off on other days.
2. Employees in this classification may be required to live on the grounds of the assigned institution or agency.
Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.
This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit as indicated by the designation of S (supervisor), M (manager), T (agency head), U (Board or Commission member), W (student), X (excluded by agency), or Z (confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and therefore, all positions in those agencies are excluded form collective bargaining.
Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
