NATURE OF WORK

A Nursing Instructor is the full performance level of work providing formal nursing instruction to Practical Nurse students and in-service training to licensed and non-licensed nursing staff at a State residential or inpatient treatment facility. Employees in this class do not supervise but train, instruct and evaluate the course work of participants and may participate in the selection of students.

Employees receive general supervision from a Nursing Education Supervisor. Employees are assigned to the day shift, but are subject to work any shift in order to meet the educational needs of facility staff. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease. The work may require the lifting and positioning of non-ambulatory patients and the lifting of wheelchairs and other heavy equipment. The work may require long periods of standing, walking, bending and reaching.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.

The Nursing Instructor is differentiated from the Nursing Education Supervisor in that the Nursing Instructor provides nursing instruction and in-service training to nursing staff while the Nursing Education Supervisor supervises the Nursing Instructor and is responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of the education program.
