An employee in this classification is responsible for the operation, navigation, and maintenance of a large maritime vessel for the State Department of Natural Resources.
The nature of the work involves varied operations and survey work on the waters and tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. It could include, or be principally involved in placement of regulatory buoys and/or research of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. As Master of a large Department of Natural Resources vessel, the employee may be involved in the surveying of submerged bottoms for the purpose of determining or delineating specific areas for oyster propagation or other classification of submerged land. The Master and crew work closely with engineers and/or biologists and other scientists of the Department of the pursuit of their activities.
This classification designates positions with responsibility for the management of a large vessel. The employee is responsible for the safety and welfare of the scientists utilizing the vessel. Work effectiveness is determined by periodic evaluations. Employees in this classification do not supervise.
Pilots and navigates vessels in Maryland tidal waters;
Performs ice breaking duties when assigned;
Directs the hoisting and replacement of buoys and spars;
Directs maintenance and repairs to engines, motors, hoisting mechanisms and other apparatus;
Operates booms, reels, winches, and other mechanical apparatus as required;
Places and recovers current meters and other scientific collection devices;
Transports passengers during public relations events;
Performs other related duties.
