NATURE OF WORK

A Carpenter is the full performance level of work in the construction, installation, alteration, removal, maintenance and repair of wooden structures, concrete forms, scaffolds, frame shelters, platforms, sign boards and general supports.  Employees in this classification do not supervise.  

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Carpenter Supervisor or other designated higher-level staff.  Work is performed at various State facilities.  Employees in this classification may be required to work in elevated areas and may be required to lift heavy objects.  

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification.  

The Carpenter is differentiated from the Carpenter Trim in that the Carpenter performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision while the Carpenter Trim is the advanced level of work in woodworking, precision cutting, fitting and finishing of wood.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Examines specifications, blueprints, and drawings to determine dimensions of the structure;

Lays floors, installs baseboards and moldings;

Repairs and builds stairs, fences and forms;

Erects partitions and scaffoldings;

Repairs chairs, tables, desks, shelves, cabinets and cupboards; Installs locks and other hardware;

Lays and repairs shingle roofs;

Surveys and recommends treatment to old and new floors; Installs acoustical ceiling tile;

Operates saws, joiners, shapers, and other power equipment;

Cleans and repairs tools and equipment; Installs glass in doors, windows, and partitions;

Performs other related duties.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
