An Audio-Visual Technician is the full performance level of technical work at the sub-professional level related to the creation and development of audio-visual training aids. Employees in this classification assist in the planning, writing and production of audio-visual scripts or narratives by selecting the media that is best applicable to an educational program. The work requires that employees in this classification to exercise creativity, perseverance, and analytical skill to prepare layouts, graphic titles and charts, film or video tape visuals, photographs, sound tracks and edits audio and video tapes. The work also requires close cooperation and contact with local school principals, members of the school staff and supervisors to obtain information, sound or photographs. After the audio-visual messages are produced, employees in this classification are responsible for cataloging and maintaining all audio-visual presentations, materials, and equipment used in production, as well as, operating the audio-visual equipment at official presentations. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Vocational Rehabilitation Supervisor or other higher level staff specialists who evaluate the work effectiveness by the quality of the visual media produced, the quality of narratives to clarify the intent and purpose of the visual production and the soundness of recommendations.
Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specification.
Assists in writing specifications for needed audio-visual equipment and supplies;
Advises and assists staff members in planning, recommending, developing, and producing appropriate audio-visual programs for presentation to selected audiences;
Transports and sets up audio-visual equipment at various official meeting places;
Makes periodic checks of systems to assure proper functioning;
Changes script and pictorial sequences as necessary, in order to keep presentations current;
Edits existing audio-visual material;
Participates in staff meetings and conferences with consultants and associates in the field of audio-visual technology;
Produces integrated layouts, graphic titles, charts, films, sound tracks, and photographs;
Catalogs all videotapes and visual aids and stores according to instructions;
Maintains all audio-visual equipment and accessories to assure operating efficiency;
Keeps abreast of the latest innovations in the audio-visual field;
Performs other related duties.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System. All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions. Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.
This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
