This is physician work at the managerial level. The majority of positions in these classifications are located in the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Employees in these classifications supervise or oversee the supervision of all assigned professional, technical and support staff employees through subordinate supervisors.
Employees receive managerial supervision from a higher-level administrator or an executive.
Levels within this series are differentiated based on the classification method of job evaluation.
Positions in these classifications have the following functions: Physician Program Manager III - Clinical director of a residential institution or facility;
Develops and implements medical guidelines, procedures, standards and controls;
Evaluates implementation of programs and coordinates with public and private agencies providing similar services;
Plans, organizes and supervises the work of assigned subordinate personnel;
Formulates policy and coordinates the activities for various services within the program;
Collaborates and consults with physicians in preparation of activity plans and short and long range planning;
Addresses professional and lay groups;
May preside at ward, diagnostic and clinical conferences on appropriate treatment required for specific cases;
May review clinical records of patients to assure their adequacy and proper administration;
May provide consultation and review of the clinical appropriateness of prescribed medications and laboratory tests;
May provide hands-on patient and clinical services;
May provide consultative services in an area of medical specialization;
Performs other related duties.
Specific educational and experience requirements are set by the agency based on the essential job functions assigned to the position.

1. Applicants must be licensed and currently registered with the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A copy of the current registration must be attached to the application.
2. Employees in the Physician Program Manager III classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
