NATURE OF WORK

This is a twelve-month administrative position at the Maryland School for the Deaf. The MSD School Administrator has full managerial responsibility and directly supervises teachers, teacher aides, speech language pathologists, counselors, audiologists behavior specialists and other student support personnel.  They receive managerial level supervision from the superintendent of the school.

 

Budgets, logistics, schedules, disciplinary actions, evaluations and public relations fall under the purview of school administrator. They also are involved in matters like planning graduation, prom as well as school field trips and implementing curriculum.

 

They interact with parents, representatives of the Local School Districts around the state, the assistant superintendent of the special education department at the Maryland Department of Education and curriculum specialists at MSDE.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Interview and recommend for hire teachers, teacher aides and other support staff for the department. 

Observe and evaluate staff two times per year and give guidance in areas of weakness.

Assist teachers with classroom use of the Maryland Common Core State Standards and manage complex change to align curriculum, instruction and assessment to ensure students are learning at high levels.

Participate in the coordination of class scheduling and teacher assignments.

Direct and assist in management of student behavior

Develop Professional Development Plan for teachers, review bi-annually and incorporate needed corrections into the bi-annual evaluation.

Participate in the development of health and safety protocols that ensures health and safety for all staff members and students including support for the School Resource Officer under the MD Safe to Learn Act.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a Master’s Degree in the Education of Deaf Students, Education of Deaf students with additional disabilities or a related field.

Maryland State Department of Education Administrator license is required

A minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience and Deaf and Hard of Hearing students is required.

Must be fluent in American Sign Language and written English and must have an understanding of the Deaf community.
