NATURE OF WORK

A Teacher Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) Plus Credit Hours MSDE is work teaching one or more subjects to youth or adult students in an educational program operated by the Maryland State Department of Education or the Department of Juvenile Services at a correctional, juvenile services or vocational rehabilitation facility. Employees in these classifications do not supervise other Teachers MSDE.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Principal or other educational administrator at the facility. The work is performed in a correctional or juvenile services or vocational rehabilitation facility where students may be disruptive or abusive and may require remedial training or comprehensive rehabilitation services.

Position allocation to a level within the Teacher classification series is determined by an assessment of the employee’s educational credentials by the supervising educational administrator using Maryland State Department of Education regulations and guidelines.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Provides classroom instruction in one or more subjects to students in an educational program at a correctional or juvenile services facility or vocational rehabilitation facility;

Prepares daily and weekly lesson plans and other instructional material;

Assigns lessons and administers tests to students;

Cooperates with correctional and vocational rehabilitation case management staff and counselors and provides student attendance and progress reports to students and staff;

Cooperates with interdisciplinary staff in planning, implementing and monitoring comprehensive rehabilitation programs;

Facilitates and maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning;

Assesses emergency and crisis situations, makes appropriate contacts and referrals and provides interim emergency medical and other assistance as necessary until specialized assistance is available;

May provide General Educational Development instruction, training in basic life skills or vocational instruction;

Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:   Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: None.
