NATURE OF WORK

Coordinator of Correctional Education Programs is professional work in the Maryland State Department of Education wherein employees are responsible for a defined instruction or library program area within the Correctional Education Program. An employee in this classification is responsible for a defined core correctional education program area such as academic education, special education, vocational education, transition and life skills education, post secondary education, or library services. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from the Director of Correctional Education or another designated administrator. Each position has an extended title, known as a designated option, which is based on the position's assigned core program area and which distinguishes it from others in the same classification assigned different options. This work requires travel throughout the State.

Position allocation to this classification is determined by position function. Employees in this classification have full responsibility for the development, implementation and coordination of a core correctional education program area as defined above.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Assures that appropriate educational curriculum, library, and related services are planned for residents of Maryland correctional institutions based on departmental policy, State and federal regulations, and an understanding of the characteristics, capabilities, needs and interests of incarcerated adult students;

Plans and implements in-service training programs in an academic, special education, vocational education, transition and life skills education, post-secondary education and/or library science area for correctional teachers;

Assists Principals in planning an effective deployment of staff, material, and information resources based on program objectives and effective classroom instruction;

Reviews and monitors the results of programs under their control, evaluates program effectiveness and assures that practices are appropriately maintained, enhanced, or modified;

Monitors staff record keeping practices as relates to the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and program assessment and accountability reporting requirements;

Assists Principals in negotiating operational arrangements in the delivery of the assigned educational program area with Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services officials, community colleges, local boards of education, other educational or library systems, and other State agencies;

Remains current on trends in the assigned educational program area and monitors market trends to ensure curriculum provides students with marketable job skills;

Prepares proposals for financing educational and library programs and manages grant resources;

Follows security guidelines of the correctional institutions and directs the school programs in cooperation with the managing officer of the institution;

Performs other related duties.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a Master's Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work in Education or Education Administration/Supervision or a Maryland Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education or Education Administration/Supervision or eligibility for a Maryland Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate.

Experience: Three years of administrative/supervisory experience directly related to the assigned core program area in a correctional education program or in an education program providing services to an institutionalized or disadvantaged population.
