Summary

The Center for Digital Government named Charlotte one of the top five digital cities in the nation. The City of Charlotte's Innovation & Technology department (I&T) provides executive-level leadership, delivers technology services to city departments and partnership agencies, and coordinates information technology initiatives across the organization to support, enhance and advance citizen service delivery.

The Server Administrator works at the direction of the Aviation Technology Infrastructure Manager for the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  The Server Administrator manages servers, both physical and virtual, for the Aviation’s multi-server environment. This position participates in the planning, implementation, configuration, troubleshooting, high availability, compliance management and support of Aviation systems including but not limited to passenger supporting systems such as baggage handling, parking systems, common use, flight information and other related access control and camera systems.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Dell and HP physical server infrastructure.
  • Install, configure, and maintain VMware servers and storage resources.
  • Monitor system performance and resource utilization, as well as responding to alerts and maintaining lights out management connectivity.
  • Provide technical analysis and/or assistance in troubleshooting issues.
  • Apply security, patches, updates, and firmware updates to server systems. 
  • Initiate and drive server strategies, architecture discussions, and preventative maintenance plans.
  • Work with vendors to ensure optimal setup and configuration of server environments and that appropriate support expectations are in place.
  • Create and maintain server related operational policies and procedures.
  • Comply with the approved standards, policies, and procedures within the culture of compliance that has been established.
  • Provide accurate monthly reports to management teams for physical and virtual server availability and uptime.
  • Assist will backup and restoration of virtual and physical servers.
  • Work various shifts, on a sliding schedule and weekends as needed to complete related work. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • PCI security standards for Servers.
  • Windows and Linux server operating systems and commands.
  • Information Technology Service Management.
  • Microsoft Infrastructure, including AD, DNS, CS, RDS, SCCM.
  • VMWare Infrastructure, including vCenter, HA, DRS, Datastores, vSANs.
  • Programmable logic controllers.
  • Work order and ticket management system.
  • Automated Control, Access Control, and CCTV System Availability Requirements.
  • Project management systems.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other departmental staff, consultants, contractors, supervisors, and department officials.
  • Express ideas clearly, concisely and respectfully, orally and in writing in group settings.
  • Use hand tools such as screw drivers and pliers.
  • The prevention of physical and virtual server hardware and software failures.

Preferred Qualification

  • Prefer at least 3-5 years of VMWare virtualization technologies in an enterprise environment. 
  • Prior experience implementing and managing large enterprise server systems.
  • Previous experience managing and supporting Enterprise Server Infrastructure that includes critical security, airport, or factory systems is a plus. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors level degree with three (3) years of experience in Windows Server an enterprise environment.

Salary

$84,295 - $105,369 Commensurate with Experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
