Summary

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking a Train Control Technician Lead within our Rail Operations Division. 

The Train Control Technician Lead will be responsible for leading a group of technicians in the absence of other supervision and leading the group of technicians to perform complex and specialized troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance,  overhauls of train control and communications equipment and their associated sub-systems, assist CATS and City engineers with enhancements/re-designs to the existing and new systems, and support contractor construction and testing activities as required.   

The equipment involved includes, but is not limited to: train to wayside communications, vital controllers, automatic train protection, vital track circuits, rail switch machines, grade crossing equipment, signals, the SCADA system, network switches, public address systems, telephones, and passenger information system. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with and leads other members of the Maintenance of Way workforce and all related vocations to provide safe and reliable equipment for daily revenue service
  • Responds to rail system emergencies that involve major service delays and/or serious equipment failures 
  • Renders whatever remedial actions are needed to restore revenue services 
  • Ensures that technicians follow and adhere to all Maintenance of Way standards, policies and procedures applicable to the day-to-day operations of revenue service, complies with and enforces all safety recommendations/regulations set forth by CATS, FRA, OSHA, IEEE, FTA, and NCDOT 
  • Leads efforts in generating comprehensive operational and maintenance procedures that ensure accurate, complete technical guidance and safety to employees and equipment
  • Utilizes computer based maintenance and material management system
  • Assists in training and mentoring of other Maintenance of Way personnel
  • Exhibits professional conduct while working cohesively with other CATS and other City departments, as well as contractors and utility companies
  • Will respond to accidents, train control related issues along the alignment, rail system emergencies and provide any needed support for maintenance of way needs
  • Direct shifts on an as-needed basis, working any shift as needed, and performing other duties as required
  • Requires decision-making, leadership, accountability, problem solving, monitoring of processes, work assignment and material usage
  • Individual will give input that contributes to performance evaluations of employees to supervisor
  • Have thorough knowledge of the existing CATS train control and communications system
  • Have a basic working knowledge and basic troubleshooting capability for all aspects of OCS, Track and Traction Power systems

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in the maintenance of light rail train control and communications
  • Requires the ability to learn and teach/mentor other Train Control Technicians in specialized testing and in troubleshooting equipment. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that all vital equipment is working in a fail-safe mode. 
  • Will provide emergency guidance/response and will be called upon to provide support or lead other areas in regard to light rail service, special events, streetcar, and public safety and service.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma/GED with five (5) years of relevant work experience

or an Associate’s degree with three (3) years of relevant work experience

Experience requires the repairing and maintaining complex digital, electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical systems and their components down to the lowest replaceable unit Valid Driver's License

Must be able to obtain and maintain a City Driving Permit throughout employment

This position is considered "Safety Sensitive" under FTA guidelines and will be subject to random drug and alcohol test 

Salary

$27.43 - $36.00/hr; Commensurate with Experience
