Summary

In working to put communities and citizens first, the City of Charlotte’s Department of Planning, Design, and Development is committed to creating great places. The Department of Planning, Design, and Development is chiefly responsible for collaborating with community partners, guiding growth, sustaining the natural environment while also designing vibrant and inclusive avenues for citizen enjoyment.

The Senior Project Management position responsible for leading efforts to translate planning concepts and regulatory processes and initiatives to the public, social media postings, and managing related community outreach. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Interpret and translate information that has broad and significant community impact and/or is highly technical in nature to the public on the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan, Unified Development Ordinance, Tree Canopy Action Plan, other planning initiatives, regulatory processes, rezonings and adopted land use policies; 
Partner with the city’s enterprise communications and marketing team to effectively communicate critical information effectively to the public, media/press including coordinating response to requests for information from media outlets.
Develop community engagement plans for major initiatives;
Identify and engage the community on strategic linkages between core initiatives and broader City policies, regulations and objectives;
Organize meetings and meeting logistics, sometimes outside of regular business hours;
Prepare reports on community participation, make recommendations and develop metrics for measuring success;
Coordinate and collaborate with other departments, jurisdictions, agencies, consultants and the public;
Build and sustain relationships in the community and across departments and agencies;
Functioning as a team member or leader on multiple projects;
Other duties as assigned.
A valid driver license and the ability to obtain a City Driving Permit are required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Basic understanding of planning and regulatory processes and be able to communicate these effectively to a broad range of diverse audiences;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to write compelling, concise materials to effectively speak in public;
Demonstrated success in communicating complex multi-disciplinary planning and regulatory perspectives for the general public to understand;
Demonstrated success in community engagement of diverse audiences at a City-wide scale;
Initiative and self-motivation in a fast-paced and ever-changing work environment;
Proven record of working successfully with the public, media, and government officials; 
Ability to work independently, exercising initiative and independent judgment;
Strong ability to effectively work on several projects at the same time; and
Must be able to handle difficult and sensitive situations with discretion and grace.
Excellent public speaking and writing skills
Significant experience in engaging diverse groups of people, and incorporating their voices

Preferred Qualification

Master’s degree with five (5) years of professional experience 
Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in planning or related field with experience in journalism, communications or public relations with seven (7) years of relevant experience

Salary

$77,605 – $94,868 Commensurate with Experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
