Summary
This position is based in the Airfield Maintenance Division in the Landscape group of Charlotte Douglas International Airport. This Landscape Technician position is responsible for providing technical and administrative support in all aspects of Landscape Maintenance operations.
General Information:
• Subject to emergency call backs to work, overtime and change in shifts and return to work during inclement weather.
• Valid CDL-B required. Ability to obtain a tank vehicle endorsement within six months of employment. Must meet requirements to obtain and maintain a City driving permit.
• Must successfully pass and maintain an active Security Threat Assessment (STA) and Criminal History Records Check (CHRC). Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore from employment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. Perform daily, seasonal, and annual tasks to support Landscape Operations including Tree Maintenance, Landscape maintenance/installation, pesticide application, skilled equipment operation, and some moderate to heavy manual labor.
2. Properly and safely operate equipment such as: pesticide sprayers, water trucks, landscape tools used in Tree and Landscape maintenance/installation and other utility work machines, skid steers, mowers, chippers, trucks, trailers, as needed.
3. May lead small team work and work independently to meet or exceed City goals and expectations; directing subordinate staff in assigned work.
4. Assist in various landscapes renovation and installation projects.
5. Read and understand safety data sheets, landscape designs, maps, and equipment repair manuals.
6. Provide basic equipment maintenance including but not limited to: sharpening chainsaws, changing mower blades, and greasing equipment.
7. Provide traffic control when needed in accordance with the NC DOT and WATCH Handbook.
8. Work with citizens to resolve complaints in the field.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Basic knowledge of Landscaping/ Horticultural practices and plants indigenous to the southeastern U.S.
• Basic knowledge of pruning and planting practices.
• Basic knowledge of pesticides and their safe and proper use, application, and storage
• Basic knowledge of Landscape/Construction equipment and their safe and proper uses.
• Basic knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods of time
• Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public.
Physical Requirements:
Spends 85% of the time operating various equipment. Performs related manual labor during the remainder of the time. Must be able to lifting and carry up to 50 lbs. Work involves sitting, standing, bending, walking, driving, climbing, lifting, shoveling, pushing/pulling, carrying, twisting, reaching, and kneeling/squatting. Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to operate manual and automatic vehicles. Must be able to push/pull up to 100 lbs., for example during tree planting, dragging brush, etc.
Works primarily outside. Exposed to machinery, moving objects, vehicles, dust, slippery and uneven surfaces, excessive noise, vibrating tools and inclement weather. May have exposure to extreme hot/cold temperatures, humidity, rain, snow, ice, etc. Works shifts and irregular hours.
Preferred Qualification
At least five years of experience in horticulture/arborculture fields or combined experience of three years with college education is strongly preferred.
NC pesticide license.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years related work experience
OR
High School Graduate or Equivalent and one year related work experience
AND
Required: CDL A or B depending on area of assignment
