Summary
Performs journey and master level locksmith
duties on the campus of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) as well
as other property owned by CLT. Within a full-service lock shop, the Airport
Locksmith works with commercial and institutional doors and locking systems to ensure
the integrity of locks, keys, and other security systems. Responds
to calls for service and works with a variety of customers such as general
business, federal agencies, and Airport security. Acts decisively and exercises independent
judgment within established rules, regulations, and procedures. Often works alone and without direct
supervision. Work is evaluated based on
results, observation and feedback from customers.
General Information:
• Works assigned shift in a 24/7/365 work environment. Hours vary and will likely require weekend and/or evening work. Schedule subject to overtime, change and calls back to work for emergency/urgent situations.
• Possibility to share in responsibility of being on-call for locksmith duties.
• Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points and the ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit.
• Certain criminal convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.
• Must be able to obtain authorization for a customs seal in order to gain access to the Customs and Immigration area.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Core Duties:
1. Installs, maintains, rebuilds, repairs and inspects all lock hardware, key systems, safes, and related mechanisms in keeping with security, fire and safety regulations in all Airport facilities, buildings, and grounds including perimeter fencing.
2. Rekey and install cylinders
3. Installs, programs and repairs mechanical and electronic combination locks.
4. Conducts periodic inspections of doors and new tenant construction, correcting deficiencies to ensure proper security.
5. Performs safe combination changes, mechanical and electronic.
6. Responds to calls for service on the campus of CLT as well as other property owned by CLT, which may include emergency after hours response.
7. Ensures integrity of master key system using a Microsoft Access database. Performs key audits as needed.
8. Maintains inventory of stock required for repairs, installations, and special projects.
9. As needed, assists Airport carpenters and maintenance mechanics in performing work such as hanging doors, installing frames, or any other work that may be performed in conjunction with security locks.
10. Maintains shop equipment and system records, tracking keys, cores, and individual access.
11. Researches new locks, locking systems, keyways, or standards as needed.
12. Maintains an awareness of and adheres to requirements mandated by the TSA, FAA, and Customs and Border Protection regulations as well as the Airport Security Plan (ASP). This includes knowing TSA rules and regulations, and auditing and maintaining records for security-accountable keys and locks.
13. Maintains continuing education requirements to retain locksmith licenses and certifications.
14. Stays abreast of technological changes in the locksmithing industry.
15. Other Duties As Assigned.
Specialized Areas (Experience beneficial):
1. Creates automotive keys and vehicle locks for ignitions and doors. Replaces lost keys, programs electric vehicle keys by code based on manufacturer, and programs vehicle transponders.
2. By-pass methods on mechanical and electronic safes and safe deposit box locks.
3. By-pass methods on automotive locks.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of and adherence to the NFPA 80 life safety codes (National Fire Protection Association), local fire safety codes, and building codes is essential.
• Working knowledge of hand and power tools for the locksmith trade, such as files, chisels, power drills, rulers, and equipment such as CNC high security key machines, manual key-cutting machines, Best Key combination punch, lock picks, key cloning machine, depth gauge, car opening tools.
• Working knowledge of automotive locksmithing and transponder immobilizer systems a plus.
• Skills to use specialized equipment to include die grinders, volt meters, key engraving equipment.
• Ability to prep new doors with lock jigs.
• Experience in master keying systems designed to provide a restricted key way to prevent unauthorized duplication of keys.
• Basic computer skills including knowledge of MS Office suite - Excel, Outlook, Word and Access required, as well as other standard office equipment.
• Familiarity with the products of Allegion, Schlage and other manufacturers of locksmithing products which include key blanks, lock sets, lever sets, interchangeable core cylinders, electronic locks, etc.
• Ability to respond calmly in emergency situations, work effectively with limited supervision, follow complex instructions, and keep accurate records.
• Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner with Airport tenants, co-workers and the general public.
• Ability to represent Charlotte Douglas International Airport in a professional, positive manner.
Preferred Qualification
Prefer experience in installing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and electronic lock and key systems. Working knowledge of other building trades is a plus. Must obtain a North Carolina State Locksmith license within one year and maintain requirements. If no license at the time of hire, must be accredited through a nationally recognized locksmith association. Certification from the (ALOA) Association Locksmiths of America with the designation of Certified Master, Certified Professional or Certified Registered is highly desirable.
